Arthur Ira Garfunkel was born in Forest Hills, Queens, New York City, on November 5, 1941. Art grew up in a Romanian Jewish family with two brothers. Some of his first musical experiences were singing in the synagogue. The late Lou Pearlman, who started the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, was Art’s cousin.

By the time he was in the first grade, Garfunkel was giving himself goosebumps by singing songs like “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Unchained Melody.” When Art was young, his father gave him a wire recorder that he used to record himself singing. He then listened to the recordings again and looked for things to fix. As part of his bar mitzvah, he played the traditional part of a cantor and sang for four hours straight.

Art had to stop singing for the whole summer when he was a teen because he had a lung infection. Instead, he worked on his basketball shots. Even now, he still shows that he loves basketball. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel first met when they were in the sixth grade. At that time, they were both in a school production of “Alice in Wonderland.” Garfunkel says that Simon got the idea to become a singer after seeing him sing at a talent show.

From the middle of the 1950s to the beginning of the 1960s, Simon and Garfunkel made music together as “Tom & Jerry.” The Everly Brothers influenced the two of them to sing in two-part harmony and play at school dances. They put out “Hey Schoolgirl” in 1957, and it went to number 49 on the charts.

This was the first time that Simon and Garfunkel really disagreed with each other. Sid Posen, who worked for a record label, approached Paul Simon with a deal for two more singles (as a solo artist). Simon didn’t tell Art Garfunkel about this, and Art felt cheated. After Tom and Jerry, the two went in different directions.

Garfunkel went to Columbia University after high school and majored in architecture. He joined teams for tennis, skiing, fencing, and bowling when he was in college. He also kept going with his music career by joining the Columbia Kingsmen, an all-male a cappella group. Art got his B.A. in art history in 1965. He then went on to get his M.A. in mathematics education in 1967.
