After the invasion of Russia, women in Ukraine are now fighting for their lives as well as their identity. There are reports that women in the city of Ivankav are forced to cut their hair to avoid rape. However, this is not the first time that women have been raped in the war-torn country. Earlier, a woman had claimed that she was raped by Russian soldiers. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced military action against Ukraine on 24 February.
According to a report, deputy mayor Marina Beshastana said that women cut their hair short to appear “less attractive” so as not to be captured by Russian troops. On 30 March, the city was freed from the control of the Russian army.
The deputy mayor said that during the occupation the women were pulled out of the basement by the hair so that Russian soldiers could harass them. “Girls cut their hair to look less attractive, so no one looks at them anymore,” he said. He also referred to an incident where two sisters, aged 15 and 16, were allegedly raped in a nearby village.
