Slasher (2016-2019)
Slasher, a Canadian horror anthology series that debuted in 2016 on the short-lived horror platform Chiller before migrating to Netflix, has a fairly standard premise for the genre: Consider the masked killer, consider his victims, and consider their lack of intelligence for becoming a slasher fodder in the first place. It’s a trope that’s created reams of screams and gallons of fake blood for years of horror films, and Slasher just draws the line across your throat a little further.
Slasher is a season-long anthology series that unfolds like a slasher film. Each season begins a fresh plot with a different killer and a distinct cast of individuals (though some actors appear in many seasons). Different seasons will cater to different interests, but Slasher is a good horror series with a bit of mystery and a lot of blood.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
The Haunting of Hill Home (2018) is a terrific haunted home series that weaves the past and present together to tell the story of a truly terrifying family drama. The Crain family’s children have grown up and separated, but they reunite after tragedy strikes. Seeing each other brings back memories of when they all lived at Hill House together. This is one of several Netflix series and films from filmmaker Mike Flanagan.
Marianne (2019)
In the spooky French horror series Marianne, a novelist is haunted by the witch from one of her works. Emma (Victoire Du Bois) created a career out of writing horror novels about a witch named Marianne, but she’s ready to move on. Emma returns to her hometown following the loss of a childhood friend, where she discovers that, while she may be finished with Marianne, Marianne is not finished with Emma. Marianne is a scary story about how you can never go home again.
Black Summer (2019)
Despite being a spinoff of the Syfy series Z Nation, Black Summer functions as a prequel to the earlier TV show. Black Summer is set in the early days of a zombie apocalypse and explores the challenges of many survivors as they cross paths while attempting to live to see another day. Overall, Black Summer is dismal and scary, with the living dead just moderately more threatening than humanity thrust into a desperate and nearly hopeless situation. In this horrific zombie series, Jaime King, Justin Chu Cary, and Christine Lee star.

Kingdom (2019)
Kingdom is a South Korean zombie series that features high-octane action and dramatic political intrigue. During the Joseon dynasty of Korea in the 16th century, the monarch is imprisoned after falling severely ill. The Crown Prince (Ju Ji-hoon) grows concerned about his father’s health. When the prince leaves the palace to explore the cause of the king’s illness, he discovers a vast scheme to capture the throne, which has resulted in an increase in the number of extraordinarily quick and vicious zombies. International star Bae Doona also appears in Kingdom.
Detention (2020)
Detention is a Taiwanese horror series that effectively combines folk horror and urban legends with a political context. The plot follows a female student in the 1990s as she transfers to a new school. Throughout the series, the young woman is dragged into a mystical mystery in which she learns about the life of a student who attended the school 30 years ago during a period of extreme persecution in Taiwan known as the “White Terror.” The show is based on the same-named point-and-click video game, although it deviates enough from the source material that the game and the show complement one another.
Ju-On: Origins (2020)
Ju-On: Origins is a new take on the Ju-On franchise’s renowned cursed house, inspired by the long-running Japanese film series that includes Ju-On: The Grudge (2002).
Instead of telling the story of the cursed house’s origins, as the title suggests, this Netflix series positions itself as an adaptation of the real-life events that inspired the films (despite the fact that the films are not based on any specific incident). Ju-On: Origins is able to deliver viewers significant surprises in this very entertaining retelling of the Ju-On legend by detaching itself from the continuity of the movies. It’s creepy, violent, and strange in the greatest manner possible.
