The Number of Indian Students in the US is Rising Faster Than Chinese

According to the Open Doors Report 2022, issued Monday, the number of Indian students choosing the United States for higher education has more than doubled in the last decade, with the country’s proportion of total international students increasing from 11.8 percent to 21%.

When compared to China, which continues to account for the largest cohort of international students in the US with a share of 31%, but with a slower decadal growth rate as its share was already 29% in 2012-13, the numbers take on greater relevance.

The number of Indian students studying in the United States is expected to overtake China in 2022-23, with 82,000 visas given between June and August this year, the largest number among all countries. According to Don Heflin, Minister Counsellor for Consular Affairs at the US Embassy in New Delhi, 62,000 student visas were issued during a similar time in 2021-22.

Overall, the number of overseas students studying in the United States increased from 9.14 lakh in 2020-21 to 9.48 lakh in 2021-22. “The rise is not restricted to Indians.”

“The data show that the United States remains the top destination for students seeking higher education possibilities, and this also demonstrates that the country continues to offer future chances,” Heflin said, adding that the “majority” of Indian students are enrolled in master’s programs.

China and India will account for 52% of all overseas students in the United States in 2021-22. The US Department of State sponsors the Open Doors study, which is a survey of international exchange activity in the United States and is carried out by the non-profit Institute of International Education (IIE).

In absolute terms, 1,99,182 Indian students were pursuing higher education in the United States in 2021-22, up from 1,67,582 in 2020-21, representing a 19% increase. In 2012-13, there were 96,654 Indian students enrolled in higher education in the United States.

According to the most recent UK immigration figures released in August, India has surpassed China as the country with the highest share of study visas given by the UK. The UK issued 4,86,868 sponsored study visas in the fiscal year ending June 2022, with Indian nationals accounting for 1,17,965 – an 89% rise from the previous year. Meanwhile, 1,15,056 study visas were issued to Chinese people.
