The Cost of Convenience: State Budget Proposal Considers Charging for Street Parking

0

According to a state budget proposal, people will be charged for a permit to park on neighbourhood streets. This is an effort to prevent out-of-town parkers and also raise more money for the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

If the plan is adopted, New York City residents will be required to pay for a permit to park on their own streets overnight. This strategy is intended to make it easier for drivers to find parking in their town.

Residents would be charged a $30 monthly fee for a parking permit under the idea, which is supported by state Senate Deputy Majority Leader Mike Gianaris. That money would go towards funding the city’s public transit system.

According to the state Senate, this might raise $400 million for the MTA each year. Only cars with New York licence plates may register for these permits, making it more difficult for out-of-state commuters to locate parking on residential streets.

The budget proposal is still in the early phases of development. If the plan is accepted, the city will decide how and in which neighbourhoods it will be executed.
