Shahid Kapoor’s Blackly Comic Series, “Farzi,” Is Revealed in Its First Trailer

The first trailer for Farzi, which stars Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi and was made by the hitmaking duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K., has been released by Prime Video. They are better known as Raj & D.K. because they created and co-directed the popular Prime Video show The Family Man.

Kapoor plays an artist named Sunny in Farzi, which means “fake” in Hindi. Sunny is upset by the social inequality in modern India, where the rich get richer and the poor stay in debt forever. He decides to use his artistic skills to help change things. He and his friends come up with a plan to print fake money. He says in a voiceover as he falls slowly onto a bed of cash, “I want to make so much money that I don’t need to respect it anymore.”

Sunny thinks of himself as a sort of rebel, but he is also a pretty good artist. As we watch him work, he says with confidence, “I’m a master of all styles.” But before he can think about what he’ll do with all of his new money, a couple of bad guys start following him. Sethupathi plays a law officer who is a bit of a mystery and is one of his main enemies. The gangster, played by Kay Kay Menon, is the last character.

The trailer gives a taste of the darkly funny tone that Raj and D.K.’s movies are known for. The pair got their start with the crime movie Shor in the City and the zombie comedy Go Goa Gone. However, it wasn’t until 2019’s spy series The Family Man that they really made it big. In 2021, a second season with the same level of success came out. They are now working on a number of different projects, including Guns & Gulaabs for Netflix and two series for Prime Video, Gulkanda Tales and the Indian part of the Russo brothers’ Citadel.

Kapoor has been a mainstay in Bollywood for 20 years. He started out as a romantic lead and then moved on to darker roles. Some of his most popular movies are the thriller Kabir Singh, the historical epic Padmaavat, and the love story Jab We Met. On the other hand, Sethupathi mostly works in the Tamil film industry. India, you see, has a number of local language industries that work on their own. This is the first thing Sethupathi has done in Hindi (he has more on the way). Menon, on the other hand, is one of the most well-known actors of his generation, and he stars in his own spy show on Disney+ Hotstar called Special Ops.

The Farzi trailer shows that most of the show will take place in Mumbai, which is where Bollywood is based. However, in true Raj and D.K. style, the story takes place all over the country. For example, Sethupathi’s character is clearly south Indian because he speaks broken Hindi, but we meet him while he’s on a mission in Nagaland, a state in the northeast of the country. We also see narrow streets, wide deserts, and open water, which show us more about how big the show is.

Written by Raj & D.K., Sita R. Menon, and Suman Kumar, Farzi also stars Raashi Khanna, Regina Cassandra, Zakir Hussain, Bhuvan Arora, Amol Palekar, and Kubbra Sait. The show starts on February 10 on Prime Video. You can watch the trailer here, and if you want to know what else is going on, stay tuned to Collider.
