The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Monday released a stunning image of the Martian crater that left people completely stunned. “Martian crater marks the spot,” the space agency wrote in the caption of the Instagram image.
NASA captured the image on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter using the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE). In a social media post he told his followers that he was observing 0° longitude on Mars, which is equivalent to Greenwich Observatory on the Red Planet.
“Here is a map at a scale of 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) per pixel,” NASA wrote in the caption. Take a look at the following image:
After sharing, the post garnered over 449,000 likes. Several Instagram users expressed their apprehensions in the comments section. One user wrote, ‘There is an alien footprint on Mars. Another wrote, “There is beauty in all of God’s creation and the universe is no salvation,” wrote a third user, “Something amazing that will amaze you!!!”
In a panoramic image of Mars, NASA has revealed in a caption that a large crater sits in another rocky basin, called “Erie Crater.” This explains why Erie Crater originally defined zero-longitude for the Red Planet, however, as scientists began to obtain more detailed images of the planet’s surface, more precise markers were needed. Therefore, the space agency has designated a smaller crater – called Erie-0 (zero) – because it is the main meridian that replaces the existing map.
