Zooey Zephyr is an American politician who was the first openly transgender person elected to the Montana state legislature. She is a Democrat who represents Missoula in the Montana House of Representatives.
Who is Zooey Zephyr?
In 2022, 34-year-old Zephyr ran for office, calling herself a “progressive, bisexual trans woman” who wanted to “fight for social and economic justice by getting into the room where the laws are written.”
She went on to win the election with 79.3% of the vote and was sworn in as the representative of Montana’s 100th House district, which encompasses Missoula, in January.
Zephyr was born in Billings, Montana, and went on to attend the University of Washington before returning to her home state as a graduate student and eventually as a staff member at the University of Montana.
Zephyr worked in the biology department of the university, and then in the provost’s office, to increase faculty diversity, equity, and inclusion. According to one of her tweets, she was also a competitive video game player.
According to her website, Zephyr ran on a platform of advocating for human rights, such as voting rights, trans rights, and jail reform. She stated that she intends to concentrate her efforts on areas where Montana is failing, such as housing disparity, health care, infrastructure, and climate change.

First, Republican lawmakers voted on a party-line vote on April 26th to censure Rep. Zephyr, thus removing her off the floor for the length of the legislative term.
This came after she spoke out against proposed legislation that would make it illegal for transgender adolescents to get gender-affirming care.

While Republican legislators around the country insulted transgender Americans and silenced many Democratic politicians for lack of decorum yesterday, one prominent elected figure received only one vote. Her girlfriend voted “yes” when the legislator pledged to vote for her.
Zooey Zephyr, a Democrat from Montana, proposed to her partner Erin Reed, a trans rights activist, and journalist, on Friday night at a local queer prom.
Zephyr has been in the spotlight recently after Republicans in the Montana House moved to limit her physical presence in the chamber until the end of the just-finished legislative term.
She’d told her Republican colleagues that denying transgender youth access to gender-affirming care would result in “blood on their hands.” Republicans in the state were able to curtail such care.
Zephyr got down on one knee, according to photos taken at the Queer Prom event in Missoula and posted by Zephyr.
“Tonight I asked Erin to marry me,” Zephyr wrote in the early hours of Saturday morning. “About a year ago, I told Erin that I was looking for love that felt like it was home.”
“I have found that and so much more,” she went on. “I found my future, my family, and my forever.”
“At Queer Prom tonight, Zooey dropped to one knee and asked me to spend forever with her,” Reed wrote. “I said yes.”
“I can think of no better person in this world to stand side by side with,” Reed concluded. She has made me the most fortunate woman on the earth.”
