Oz and McGraw’s Scam
Oz and McGraw, who are better known as “Dr. Phil,” have talked about how their name and image are being used without their permission before. In February 2021, both talk show hosts showed episodes that taught their audiences about CBD oil and gummy bear scams. The important part of the video below starts at 1:38.
During the “Dr. Phil” episode, McGraw asked Oz about the scam page that people were sent to when they clicked on links in ads and text messages. Oz said, “It’s shocking that not a single thing you read in that document was true. I’ve never sold anything with CBD in it.” McGraw also said that he had not suggested any of these products.
The “Dr. Oz is dead” claim was linked to the shady Smilz CBD Gummies product page because the fake death was used to trick people into clicking on the fake product endorsement.
Gupta responded to the false claim that he had promoted CBD oil or CBD gummies in 2018, likely for a product other than Smilz CBD Gummies. He wrote on Twitter, “No, I haven’t started making CBD products.”
In January of this year, USA Today also said that the claim that Gupta supported CBD gummies was false. PolitiFact also said that a similar death hoax about Gupta had been spread in ads and messages to get people to click on the link.
