I Had Beef With People: Priyanka Chopra Reveals the Reason Behind Her Departure From Bollywood
Priyanka Chopra is one of the most well-known stars in Indian cinema to have successfully crossed over to Hollywood. After wowing fans and critics alike with her inspired performances in Hindi films, the actress made her Hollywood debut with her 2012 single In My City.
While many felt that scaling Hollywood was Priyanka Chopra’s natural evolution after ruling Bollywood, the actress said in a recent podcast that she relocated her base and career to the United States because she was tired of the politics in the Hindi film industry and had “beef with people.”
Priyanka Chopra revealed the reason for her decision to work in the United States for the first time in an interview with Dax Shepard on the podcast Armchair Expert. Dax Shepard said during the podcast, “So how do you determine you want to even put yourself through that?” “What made you decide to put yourself through it, and why?” “I’ve never said anything before, but I’m going to say it because you’ll make me feel comfortable,” Priyanka responded.
When asked about her move to Hollywood, she said, “I was being forced into a corner in the industry” (Bollywood). I had people not cast me, I had disagreements with people, and I am not good at playing that game, so I got bored with politics and stated I needed a break.”

During this time, Anjula Acharia of Desi Hits, who is currently Priyanka Chopra’s manager, saw her in a video and contacted her. Priyanka Chopra was filming Vishal Bharadwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf at the time.
Anjali explained that she had heard Priyanka Chopra’s demo and wondered whether the actress would be interested in pursuing a music career in the United States. The invitation came at a time when the actress was exploring opportunities outside of Bollywood, according to her.
“This music business gave me an opportunity to travel into another area of the planet, not thirst for movies I didn’t want to buy but I would demand to schmooze specific clubs and cliques of individuals,” she continued. It would need groveling, and I had worked so long by then that I didn’t want to do it.”
“So, when this music thing occurred, I was like, ‘f*** it, I’m going to America,'” Priyanka Chopra admitted openly.
The Armchair Expert Podcast’s official Instagram page shared some behind-the-scenes images of Dax Shepard and Priyanka Chopra from the session. “Starting off this week with a banger – Priyanka Chopra joins us today,” the caption says. Priyanka Chopra’s move to Hollywood, as we now know, was not limited to the music industry. The actress cemented her position with her ABC series Quantico, becoming the first South Asian to star in an American network drama series.
Following this, the actress worked on a variety of Bollywood and Hollywood projects, including Bajirao Mastani, The White Tiger, The Sky Is Pink, Baywatch, and The Matrix Resurrections. Priyanka Chopra’s next projects include the film Love Again and the web series Citadel. She will be seen in Bollywood in Jee Le Zaraa.
Priyanka Chopra found love in Hollywood as well. In 2018, she married singer Nick Jonas, and the couple welcomed their daughter in 2022.
