Who Was Gloria Dea?
Gloria Metzner was born on August 25, 1922, in Oakland, California, USA. She was Martha and Leo Metzner’s daughter. His father served in the 363rd Infantry Regiment of the 91st Division during World War I, then went home to become a paint salesman and proprietor of a paint store chain. Using the stage name “The Great Leo,” she also performed as a magician in local circles.
From the age of 4, she began doing tricks and by the age of 7, she was being noticed as “the young working magician in the world”. She was known for her hat trick, from which she drew her two pet pigs and a pigeon.
At the age of 11, she became the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians’ youngest member, and at the age of 12, she earned the Association’s prize for finest work with cattle in competition.
