Families of Those Killed in the Nepal Plane Disaster Might Stand to Lose Millions, Report Says
On January 15, a Yeti Airlines plane crashed into a gorge near Pokhara's new airport. All 72 people on board died, including five Indians. It was the worst air accident in Nepal in 30 years.
A media report on Friday said that the Nepal government has not ratified the important air carriers’ liability and insurance draught bill. This means that the families of the people who died in the Yeti Airlines plane crash are likely to lose out on millions of dollars in compensation.

Nepal finished a draught bill on a liability system for domestic flyers in 2020. This was two years after the country signed the Montreal Convention of 1999, which makes airlines responsible if a passenger dies or gets hurt.
A report said that the liability and insurance draught bill for airlines would increase compensation for death or injury by five times. It said that under the planned law, domestic airlines would have to pay at least USD 100,000 if a passenger was hurt or killed.
The report said that if a passenger dies on a domestic flight in Nepal, the airline must pay at least USD 20,000.
According to the report, the draught bill says that the carrier should make an advance payment if it thinks it is necessary to meet the immediate financial needs of a passenger or the family of a victim or to help them get through a hard time. The proposed law says that a claim for compensation should be made to the airline or one of its agents within 60 days of the event.
Officials from Nepal’s Tourism Ministry say that the proposed law is a modified version of the Montreal Convention 1999. This is because domestic airlines would not be able to follow some of the rules.
The report said that the draught bill for air carriers’ liability and insurance hasn’t thought about liability for flight delays, including the fact that people can make as many claims as they want.
Buddhi Sagar Lamichhane, a joint secretary at the Civil Aviation Ministry, said, “The draught bill is ready, and we plan to present it to the Cabinet.” “The bill will be presented to Parliament once the Cabinet gives its approval,” he said.
Ministry officials say that the slow progress of the bill is due to Nepal’s political stability and the fact that the government changes hands often. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal chose Sudan Kiranti to be the new tourism minister on Tuesday.
Himalayan Everest Insurance Company covered the Yeti Airlines plane, and they said the families of the people who died might not have to wait long to get paid.
