According to a source Denny Crum, a legendary basketball coach, died at the age of 86, the University of Louisville announced on Tuesday.
The hall-of-Famer, who coached the Louisville men’s basketball team for 30 years, died at home.
“The University of Louisville, our community, and college basketball fans everywhere have lost a legend in Coach Denny Crum,” stated University of Louisville President Kim Schatzel. “Whether leading his beloved Cardinal teams, representing the university with alumni and friends, or supporting the many community organizations that relied on his generous spirit and enthusiasm, Coach Crum left an unrivaled legacy.”
Crum led the team to 23 NCAA tournament berths and two NCAA championships from 1971 to 2001, making him one of only 14 coaches in NCAA history to win two or more crowns, according to the statement.
Crum led his team to the NCAA Final Four six times in all, according to the institution; just five coaches in history have led more Final Four teams.
Crum worked as a special assistant to the university president for many years after stepping down as head coach. According to the announcement, a new residence hall for both players and non-athletes, as well as the KFC Yum! Center court, has been named in Crum’s honor.
Crum was noted for his quiet, calm, and collected demeanor in addition to his exceptional statistics and championship triumphs. According to the statement, he was given the nickname “Cool Hand Luke” by former broadcaster Al McGuire.

“He will be remembered not only for the many wins and championships, but also for his calm demeanor, warm sense of humor, and deep love for his adopted hometown and its people,” Schatzel added. “We are better off for having known him. Our thoughts are with Susan and the entire Crum family.”
