Producer Boney Kapoor recalls the success of his film “Mr. India,” which starred Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. It was the second highest-grossing film of 1987 and featured the iconic line “Mogambo Khush Hua,” which is still remembered today.
But the most intriguing aspect of the film was the plot in which a poor street violinist and philanthropist receives a watch or cloaking device and becomes invisible after wearing it on his wrist.
Boney reveals some fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the film’s production when there were no visual effects facilities.
“Mr. India is one of these films for which not a single shot was created during post-production. Everything you see in the film was captured on film. We had a wonderful team led by Anup Patil with significant research and development expertise.
For example, if you recall the Hanuman sequence, it was entirely shot manually on the camera. I was not a fan of post-production special effects in those days, so I made every effort to avoid them. It took us approximately 380 days to complete filming. The recording of the song “Kate nahin kat te” took 21 days.”
During a conversation with host Kapil Sharma, he elaborates on why it took 21 days to film a single song.
“We had prepared a red set model for ‘Kate Nahin Katte,’ and it was decided that the song would only feature Sri. However, after the recording, Anil requested to be included in the song. It was destined to be a smash hit.
The red glass house and red mirrors were added as a last-minute addition to cleverly illustrate that Anil is singing the song. Additionally, we constructed a second glass house on a different floor for optimal lighting.”
“It was also the first time a wind machine was used to properly flow Sri’s hair and saree. The song was sensual and created an atmosphere for the entire generation due to its sensual choreography and music. From the lighting to the props and setups, every aspect of creating this masterpiece would require time.
In addition, Sri was ill for two to three days during filming, but he still shot the song with a fever “In order to promote ‘Mili,’ Boney and his daughter Jahnvi Kapoor appeared on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’, a comedy-based reality series.
