According to market tracker Counterpoint, smartphones priced below $150 accounted for a third of India’s sales in the June 2022 quarter. Mobiles of Chinese companies account for more than 80 percent of this one-third of sales.

In Hong Kong, shares of Xiaomi were down in the last minute of trading on Monday. It declined by 3.6 percent. This extends their decline this year to over 35%. People said it was unclear whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government would announce a policy or use informal channels to make Chinese companies their priority.

Financial investigation of many companies has also started

New Delhi has already placed Chinese companies operating in the country, such as Xiaomi, rivals Oppo and Vivo under scrutiny for their finances. He is accused of tax evasion as well as money laundering. The government previously called Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. Unofficial means have been used to disrupt telecommunications equipment.

Apple Inc and Samsung phones should not be affected

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple Inc. has taken this step. Or Samsung Electronics Co. is not expected to be affected. India has already banned Chinese apps for security reasons. More than 300 apps, including Tencent Holdings Limited’s WeChat and ByteDance Limited’s TikTok, are banned in the country.

China spoils market for Lava and Micromax

Smartphone sales in India by domestic companies like Lava and Micromax have seen a huge drop. In fact, the market share of these local companies is less than half because of Chinese mobiles. The reason is that China brought good and best feature phones in the market at a low price. China is the largest smartphone player in the Indian market.
