We know how much you love Lord of the Rings if you like fantasy or spectacular war sequences. But did you realize the man behind Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones is the same? Yes, it is the one and only J.R.R. Tolkien. The only difference between the two is that the former, being a movie, cannot be as continuous as the latter on our television displays.

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Alice in Wonderland, based on Lewis Carroll’s classic novel and directed by Tim Burton, is one of the best instances of fantasy movies in the industry. The plot revolves around Alice, a little girl who assists the White Queen in regaining the kingdom by destroying the Jabberwock, a creature possessed by the Red Queen.

The struggle between the two queens appears to be similar to the battle between Sauron and Saruman, and the creature appears to be similar to the various beasts of Mordor that must be destroyed before the hero can complete the quest, most notably the Balrog.

Alice in Wonderland features some fantastically bizarre characters and is an excellent method for fantasy fans to divert their focus away from Middle Earth and into this fantastic rabbit hole.

Legend (1985)

This picture, directed by Ridley Scott, was not initially a monetary success but went on to become a cult classic. A story about a ragtag group of heroes fighting Darkness (yep, the antagonist’s name is literally Darkness).

The unicorn’s horns serve as the object of desire in this fantasy film, as the ring of power does in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The conflict between good and evil, as well as the didactic tone of the plot, will undoubtedly remind viewers of Tolkien’s masterpiece.

Ergon

Eragon is a movie based on the same-named book by Christopher Paolini and directed by Stefen Frangmeier. It’s about a normal boy who finds out he has a special magic and has to find his way through a world full of dark monsters and an evil king who wants to take this magic from him. Does this sound like Lord of the Rings to you?

It is, and we hope that viewers will appreciate seeing how the child comes to accept responsibility for the dragon and becomes the hero his world requires. Willow (1988)

In some ways, this film is similar to Lord of the Rings in that a dwarf is tasked with collecting a child who will be the bane of an evil queen. Sounds like a hobbit being charged with destroying a ring that will be the bane of a dark lord.

Willow is a plain fantasy film with simple components, and spectators will find it a refreshing and light break. It takes heavily from Tolkien’s cliches, and hence viewers may appreciate witnessing a comparable trope play out on film.

Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

Gabor Csupo directed this picture, which is based on Katherine Paterson’s novel of the same name. The film tells the story of two kids who live in a treehouse and build their own imaginary world.

While the world they create is not real, unlike most fantasy genre movies that would have us believe that these worlds exist, the monsters and creatures in these children’s worlds seem every bit real to the children, and their camaraderie in the film is reminiscent of the two Hobbits who undertook the journey to destroy the ring. This film, about friendship and mystical places, will undoubtedly appeal to fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Inkheart (2008)

Iain Softley directed this picture, which was based on Cornelia Funke’s novel of the same name. The plot revolves around a man who has the ability to read characters from books, but for each character he reads, a real-life person must be included in the book.

Inkheart, a novel full of adventure and classic bad guys and forces of good, draws inspiration from a variety of great works, including Arabian Nights and The Wizard of Oz.

The universe of Inkheart develops to include other fantasy planets, and viewers are likely to fall in love with this vibrant environment, which will undoubtedly serve as an adequate substitute for Middle Earth’s experiences.

The Never-Ending Story (1984)

Based on Michael Ende’s novel of the same name and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, this film chronicles the story of a youngster who reads a book and becomes entwined with it. Although the plot is similar to Jumanji, the trappings of fantasy, such as a wicked storm named Nothing and the world of Fantasia, are similar to Middle Earth in the face of impending doom.

Both worlds’ fates are in the hands of an innocent idealistic young man, and they both come through, letting their inner heroes shine. Although the author himself criticizes the film for deviating from the premise, the message is conveyed.

Stardust(2007)

This story, based on Neil Gaiman’s novel and directed by Matthew Vaughn, follows a man from a mythological place called Wall who attempts to bring back a falling star for his loved one. However, his mission is being hampered by witches and dark forces who are also searching for the star.

A journey for a mysterious artifact and a promise to give sounds very similar to the plot of The Lord of the Rings, and while Gaiman’s writing is much lighter and viewers should not expect any epic battles, this film is dense with fantasy aspects that will appeal to fantasy fans.

Kingdom of Heaven (2005)

This film, directed by Ridley Scott, is about a blacksmith who protects Jerusalem during the Crusades. The journey of a guy from blacksmith to hero reads similarly to Samwise Gamgee’s, and the dramatic battle sequences will remind viewers of Mordor’s wars. This film, with its epic tale and large fight sequences, is ideal for fans of The Lord of the Rings.

The Hobbit Trilogy (2012-2014)

This is the closest Lord of the Rings fans can come to their own genre, as directed by Peter Jackson. The film, written by Tolkien and functioning as a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, is set sixty years before the events of Lord of the Rings. Bilbo Baggins, another hobbit, embarks on an expedition to assist Thorin Oakenshield, a dwarf, in reclaiming their home.

The trilogy introduces us to the ring in Bilbo’s hands, and we cringe at the terrors we know it will unleash. However, the trilogy is the closest thing to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, situated in the same world with the same tales and some of the same people, and it is the greatest substitute for fans who miss the trilogy.

Chronicles of Narnia

Based on C.S. Lewis’s writings, this film series depicts a group of ordinary youngsters who gain entry into a magical world and are almost immediately pitted against an opponent who aims to destroy the world. The children are impotent on their own, but when the creatures of Narnia band together and get assistance from a wise magical lion named Aslan, evil is eventually overcome.

It reads almost exactly like the Lord of the Rings story, with Aslan in place of Gandalf, the White Witch in place of Sauron, and children in place of Samwise. The magic, fantasy, and epic combat scenes are all present in Narnia, and viewers may take a fancy to this new realm, which may help them get over their Middle Earth homesickness.
